The 55-year-old noted following the 0-0 draw with West Ham United on Thursday night that Martial, left on the bench for that game, would receive a start on Sunday.
But the Frenchman was nowhere to be seen in the match-day squad, arriving at Old Trafford at 12PM before leaving in his car not long after and prompting a series of rumours in the process.
Speaking after a mundane 1-0 win over Watford, Mourinho emphasised that Martial had missed the game with an injury sustained during the side’s penultimate training session on Friday, adding that he was a doubt for the FA Cup final.
Jose: "Martial was injured. Friday training session. He had treatment at the training ground this morning. I don't know if he will be fit for the final. Knee problem."

This makes sense given that Martial was not pictured with the rest of his Man United teammates in Saturday’s open training session. Or at least more sense than an imaginary dustup with his manager in the dressing room hours before the game – although that would, funnily enough, make for a far more interesting story.
That being said, Martial – unlikely to play next weekend anyway – will head to the World Cup with France with big question marks surrounding his future. It is not a story which will be going away anytime soon.
