Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing up a summer move for Atletico Madrid right-back Sime Vrsaljko to bolster his defensive options ahead of the 2018-19 season.
Manchester United’s current first-choice full-backs are Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, both over 30, whilst other options Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian are all said to be leaving during the transfer window.
Juventus left-back Alex Sandro is thought to be Mourinho’s top target in his search for a new left-back, but he is also expected to move for a long-term replacement for Valencia at right-back if things work out for him.
The Daily Mirror report that Man United are readying an offer of £35m to take Vrsaljko away from the Wanda Metropolitano this summer, despite him only moving to Atletico from Sassuolo two years ago.
Vrsaljko endured a disappointing first season under Diego Simeone and struggled for game time, despite holding the capability to play in both full-back positions.
This season however, the Croatian international has gone up in Simeone’s estimations and, at times, has found himself above Juanfran in the right-back pecking order.
He only made 19 La Liga appearances this term, but starred in the UEFA Europa League Final as Atletico beat Marseille 3-0 to lift the European trophy and end the season on a high.
It would be an interesting move for sure, but many would believe that there are better options out there to fill in a position United so badly need reinforcements in.
