Roy Keane: Paul Pogba ‘probably’ has no good influences at Manchester United

Roy Keane has questioned the number of people available for Paul Pogba to look up to at Manchester United after a tough return to life in England.

Pogba was brought back to Man United by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2016 for a world record fee of £89m but has struggled to consistently perform since, resulting in mass criticism from pundits and fans alike.

However, the 25-year-old is now on the fringes of being one of the more senior members of the United squad after Michael Carrick‘s retirement and has been given the captain’s armband on a few occasions already by Mourinho.

United legend Keane believes Pogba’s strained form at the club could be down to not having many people to look up to and take things from, stating: “I like him, I think he’s a good player, a good kid. He probably needs better help around him, good influences around the training ground.”

Keane has team-mates who led by example, like Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce, already at United when he joined in 1993 but Pogba is already one of the most experienced midfielders in Mourinho’s ranks.

“I was the luckiest man on the planet when I was a player,” Keane continued. “I always had good lads around me, senior players who led by example. Pogba probably doesn’t have that at United.”

United have endured a strange season, winning no silverware but finishing second in the Premier League on 81 points, the best finish since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s final campaign in 2012-13, with Pogba scoring six and assisting 11 goals in 27 league appearances.

Keane added: “He’s a good player. Would he feel he could have had a better season? Probably. Usually, the good players are quite critical of themselves. When you play for Man United and you don’t win a trophy you probably would be critical of yourself.”

With midfield reinforcements set to arrive during the transfer window, United fans will be hoping that Pogba responds well to the increased competition and has his best season yet starting from August.
