Jesse Lingard: England can win World Cup this summer

Jesse Lingard is optimistic about the upcoming summer World Cup in Russia and believes that England can go all the way and win the tournament.

England have been pitted in Group G with dark horses Belgium, Tunisia, and debutants Panama but fans are sceptical about the country’s chances following a disastrous 2014 campaign.

Roy Hodgson led England into Ground D, however, defeats to Italy and Uruguay condemned the team to a rock bottom finish in the group before a 0-0 stalemate with surprise group winners Costa Rica, the worst World Cup performance from an England side since 1958.

Speaking to the media ahead of the warm-up game against Nigeria at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, Lingard insisted he has faith in the squad ahead of his first major tournament with his country.

“Can we win the World Cup? Yes. There’s a lot of quality in the team and, like the manager says, everyone brings their own attributes. If we can combine those together in the perfect way then we can go far. We’ve got to prepare right to go as far as we can.”

This year, as always, there’s a great sense of anticipation and excitement regarding the nation’s chances in Russia. However, Gareth Southgate’s squad is a youthful and hungry one, which many believe will prompt huge improvement.

England face Costa Rica at Elland Road in Leeds on Thursday before jetting off to Russia to let the real preparations commence.
