Manchester United are expected to announce their first signing of the summer, Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, in a matter of hours.
The Brazilian completed his medical at the Aon Training Complex in Carrington on Monday before finalising personal terms and signing on the dotted line at Man United’s Mayfair office in London on Tuesday.
United and Shakhtar agreed on a £52m fee for Fred before he travelled to Manchester from Brazil’s World Cup warm-up match against Croatia at Anfield down the road in Liverpool and passed his medical.
It is now believed the 25-year-old has signed his contract and is back with the Brazil squad, who are based at Tottenham Hotspur’s Enfield Training Centre before jetting off to Russia for the summer tournament.
It is not known when exactly United are planning on announcing the signing of Fred, but the club tend to prefer evenings for major announcements like this one so it’s likely it will be a matter of hours, rather than minutes.
Fred arrives at Old Trafford as an important signing, following the retirement of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini‘s inevitable departure ahead of the 2018-19 which has left Jose Mourinho‘s options fairly bare.
Mourinho may go back into the market for another midfielder to bolster his squad further, with SS Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and PSG’s Marco Verratti said to be on his wish list, but the signing of Fred is a terrific start to what should be an exciting summer transfer window.
