Diogo Dalot has given his first interview after being announced as a Manchester United player on Wednesday afternoon.
The 19-year-old right-back signed a five-year contract with the option of a further year following a successful medical at the Aon Training complex in Carrington at the start of the week.
Dalot is Man United’s second summer signing, with Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred arriving on Tuesday in a £52m deal as the club’s preparations for the 2018-19 season truly get underway.
In an exclusive interview with MUTV, the former Porto defender expressed his thoughts and expectations after becoming a United player.
“I’m very excited for the [size and] dimension of this club and I hope to achieve great things here. I know that this is one of the best clubs in the world and it is unbelievable to be here and I hope to achieve great things.”
Dalot explained that he wishes to repay the faith Jose Mourinho has shown in him, considering he is the first Portuguese the United manager has signed since taking charge at Old Trafford.
“Yeah, it’s very good. It was very important to make this choice and I hope to help him, because I know that he will help me to improve a lot. I think that age is not very important now in football. I think that if you work and you improve, I think you can handle it.”
The £19m signing is a natural right-back, but can also feature on the left side of the defence and mentioned that he’s can play wherever he is required, as long as it helps the team.
“Yeah, I prefer to play at right-back, but if I need to play in any position, I will play, no problem. I’m a hard-working player, I think. I’m very instant in improving and I’m mostly a hard-working player.”
Dalot has only played eight games of first-team football over in Portugal, but one of them came in the Champions League Round of 16 against Liverpool at Anfield, no less, and he can’t wait to play at the same level again in England.
“Yeah, it was unbelievable, my debut in the Champions League. Just feeling the weather, the Champions League, the song of the Champions League, it was very good. I’m very excited [for the challenge of Premier League football. For me, it is one of the biggest leagues in the world and I’m excited to play there.”
When asked whether he was excited to meet his team-mates following the finish of the 2018 World Cup in Russia when United jet off to the United States of America for their pre-season tour, Dalot didn’t hold back his eagerness to get and laid out his simple goal at the club.
“[Excited?] Very much so. I’m looking forward to meeting my colleagues, to meet the staff, to meet every person and to hopefully help in some way. [My goal is] just to help the club achieve good things here and win, because this is a winning team.”
Dalot finished the interview with a clear message to United supporters.
“Just expect that I will give everything for this club, for this shirt and, hopefully, help the club to win. That’s the most important thing.”
