Marcel Desailly: Paul Pogba would get into ’98 World Cup-winning France team

Retired France international Marcel Desailly has made a bold statement by claiming he believes Paul Pogba is ‘more talented’ than any midfielder of his generation.

Pogba has endured a frustrating start at Manchester United since making a then-world-record £89m return after four years at Juventus, as inconsistency has led to mass criticism from pundits and fans alike.

A number of names linked with the French national team have jumped to the 25-year-old’s defence ahead of the 2018 World Cup though, and Desailly is the latest to pour praise onto him.

“He’s more talented than any midfielder of my generation,” Desailly told Goal.

“He’s had this pressure around him and his performances for a long time. Everyone knows about his extraordinary potential but I think we’re asking too much of him.”

The ex-defender continued: “He can make the difference but other players have to assume the role of leaders, too.”

Desailly was a part of the iconic France squad that beat Brazil 3-0 in Paris to win the 1998 World Cup, so to name Pogba as a player who would fit into such an illustrious side is a huge compliment.

Pogba is once again expected to step up and be a key player for Didier Deschamps’ exciting France side this summer as they face Australia, Peru and Denmark in Group C.

As he enters into his third season as a first-team star at Man United, he’ll be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky in what seems to now be a battle to retain manager Jose Mourinho‘s faith in him as the spine of his ever-changing team.
