Real Madrid star Nacho has defended Manchester United’s David de Gea following his mistake while on international duty with Spain at the World Cup against Portugal.
The goalkeeper almost costed his side all three points after conceding from a pretty tame Cristiano Ronaldo effort and was bashed by some sections of the media.
De Gea’s quality is undeniable but his performances for his nation of late have seen some people even call for him to be dropped for the rest of the fixtures.
The Spaniard is widely considered to be United’s best player as well as their only truly world class one and Nacho has offered his support, believing the European country is lucky to have such a player on board.
David himself knows he’s made a mistake but did not hide in shame after Spain’s 3-3 draw with Portugal in a match that was labelled as the match of the tournament so far.
According to Goal, Nacho said: “He seems fine to me. He knows what happened but, as players, we are always exposed to these things. When mishaps happen, we unite and we’re all with him 100 per cent.
“He is a world-class goalkeeper and we are lucky to have a player of his calibre. He has no doubts about his own ability and he will bring a lot to the team in the future.”
Thankfully for the Red Devils, De Gea hasn’t made a mistake as he did with his country for his club for quite some time now with perhaps the last error coming during his early days at Old Trafford.
There have been suggestions that the goalkeeper was distracted by reports linking him once again with Real Madrid though it could also be because Spain changed their manager just days before the tournament began.
