Spain manager Fernando Hierro has opened up on how Manchester United star David de Gea feels following his costly mistake against Portugal, confirming he will start the nation’s next World Cup match.
The goalkeeper’s error from a Cristiano Ronaldo shot meant that his country couldn’t pick up all three points in their opening match of the tournament.
The former Euros winners will next face Iran and despite some fans calling for De Gea’s head, Hierro has decided to keep the faith with his star player.
At United the former Atletico Madrid star has looked far more reassured than he has looked playing for Spain of late but there’s no doubting his obvious world class quality.
Dropping him for one mistake would be a little harsh given how he can also save his side points with his superhuman saves and now there’s been confirmation that he won’t be dropped.
According to Sportskeeda, Fernando said: “I see David as being very calm and he has all our confidence in full. Players need confidence and support at all times and my decision [that he will play] is very clear.
“I will be fair with every player. The squad has had a day off and that helped David relax and step away, because we are more interested with natural methods in our preparations, making sure we get our heads right.”
Some Manchester United fans were actually happy to see their star goalkeeper make a costly mistake on the international stage due to what it could potentially mean.
There’s been some concern that Real Madrid will finally force a move for De Gea to happen and so the hope is that they would’ve seen what happened against Portugal and decided against a transfer.
