Gareth Southgate considering starting Marcus Rashford against Panama

Gareth Southgate is considering starting Marcus Rashford over Raheem Sterling against Panama following the youngster’s impressive cameo from the bench against Tunisia on Monday night, according to reports.

Rashford was consigned to the bench while Sterling, featuring at No.10, spurned an excellent chance to score and lacked penetration in Volgograd.

The 20-year-old’s introduction breathed new life into England’s attack and paved the way for Harry Kane to net a dramatic injury time winner.

And according to the Mirror‘s John Cross, Southgate wants to rejig his attack for the Panama game, which England will be expected to win comfortably, and keep options fresh for the meeting with Belgium by dropping Sterling for Rashford and using Ruben Loftus-Cheek ahead of Dele Alli, who picked up a thigh strain during the 2-1 win over Tunisia.

Sterling picked up decent enough positions but, with Jesse Lingard and Alli fizzing around behind him, didn’t manage to act as a successful conduit between the midfield and Kane.

And with Panama set to adopt a low block in similar fashion to Tunisia, there is plenty of sense in using the raw running power of Rashford at No.10 to open up further gaps for Kane in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday.
