From Spain: Manchester United among several clubs tracking Mateo Kovacic

Manchester United are among several clubs interested in securing the services of Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovavic.

Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for a second, younger box-to-box midfielder this summer following the arrival of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

And Kovacic has emerged as a potential option after stating in no uncertain terms following Croatia’s 3-0 win over Argentina that he wanted to leave the Bernabeu.

And according to COPE’s Arancha Rodriguez, Man United, along with Juventus and Roma, have expressed keen interest in Kovacic and are tracking his situation at the Bernabeu this summer. Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested.

Kovacic would be the ideal midfield signing purely because of his ability: just 24 and without many starts for Real but a wonderful player to watch on the ball. Control in tight spaces, passes through the lines, laser vision and anticipation. Watch him in the Supercopa last year and you’ll see that raw talent oozing out of him.

Claiming Kovacic from the Bernabeu will be extremely difficult. Florentino Perez is aware of his talent and therefore placed a mighty €300m release clause on his contract, which expires in 2021. The European champions don’t want him to go; United, therefore, will need to put up one hell of a fight to get him.
