Manchester United to sign Stoke City’s Lee Grant as third choice keeper – report

Manchester United look set to sign Stoke City keeper Lee Grant on a free transfer as their third choice keeper for next season, according to the Telegraph.

The 35-year-old produced a ‘Man of the Match’ performance for Stoke during a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford back in October 2016, making a series of remarkable saves.

He has enjoyed a fruitful club career, making over 500 appearances for a variety of clubs including Burnley, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday.

And according to the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace, Man United will bring Grant to the club on a one-year deal as Joel Pereira, the club’s third choice last term, leaves the club on loan.

Sam Johnstone, meanwhile, will follow in the footsteps of Dean Henderson, now at Shrewsbury, and leave United on a permanent basis this summer, leaving the reserve keeper spot vacant.

News of United signing a player who wasn’t even good enough to start ahead of Scott Carson at Derby may not sit well with supporters, especially amid news of Marouane Fellaini receiving a new contract, but having a 35-year-old who doesn’t mind helping to put the cones out and keep the bench warm is better than delegating that role to Pereira, who needs game time next season.
