The Brazilian impressed in cameo appearances during pre-season last summer but, against his manager’s wishes, ultimately decided to move back to La Liga on loan – this time to Valencia.
And it proved to be the right call, with Pereira making 29 appearances in total and looking at home in an impressive Valencia team which finished fourth in La Liga.
Speaking to Belgian media outlet Het Belang van Limburg, Pereira shed light on a conversation with Mourinho during which he was guaranteed another chance to impress the boss over pre-season.
“I told him that I felt ready to compete,” he said.
“He was happy to hear that and said I would get my chance. Now we will see how it goes in preseason. Then we are together again, but of course I hope to convince him.”
Pereira had chances last season but found himself deployed in central midfield – a position in which Mourinho believes he could excel but, in reality, will always be too hotly contested for the youngster to get a run of games.
He spent the 2017/18 season playing out wide, usually on the right, for Valencia, making diagonal runs into the box and looking to link up with other forwards.
And with many top players set to miss the start of pre-season and United still without a decided right sided winger, Pereira may have a real chance to show he can offer something valuable to this team.
