Manchester United have emerged as favourites to sign La Masia starlet Nico Gonzalez from Barcelona, according to reports from Spain.
Gonzalez is one of the brightest products from the club’s famous academy and has caught the eye with a series of mature midfield displays.
The 16-year-old looked set to sign a new contract with Barcelona but his head has been turned by a number of offers from abroad.
And according to Spanish media outlet SPORT, Man United have emerged as favourites to sign him this summer.
Gonzalez’s father, Fran, knows the city well having briefly joined Manchester City as a coach in 2016 and worked with David Harrison, who is now head of youth recruitment at United.
The relationship between the pair is good and Harrison has been impressed by Gonzalez’s performance for the Cadete A team last season. United had initially placed emphasis on securing young midfielder Mario Soriano from Atletico Madrid’s youth team, only for the Spaniard to renew at his current club instead.
Gonzalez, one of the three La Masia players to move directly to the Juvenil A side this summer, has been left out of the club’s plans for next season as he decides on whether to remain in Catalonia or move to Manchester.
