Ander Herrera praises ‘fantastic’ youngsters in Manchester United pre-season training

Ander Herrera has heaped praise on the youth stars Jose Mourinho has taken to the pre-season tour of America and Manchester United for recognising the importance of the academy.

Plenty of key squad members were absent from the travelling party as Man United flew out Stateside last Sunday evening due to their participation in the 2018 Russia World Cup.

This paved the way for a number of youngsters to train with the first team at the Aon Training Complex in Carrington last week before joining the senior players for their pre-season preparations.

Speaking ahead of the 1-1 draw with Club America at the University of Pheonix Stadium on Friday morning in United’s tour opener, Herrera emphasised how impressed he was at the younger players in training.

“They are very good. They are training fantastic,” Herrera said. “This club – one of the things I like the most is that we give a lot of importance to the academy.

“Not every team in the Premier League can say the same. We are the biggest club in the Premier League but we give a lot of importance to the academy.”

United supporters were filled with excitement when it was revealed that Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong, James Garner and 16-year-old Mason Greenwood all travelled to the USA for pre-season – they are the players Herrera likes the look of.

“I like [Chong] because he is very brave. When he trains he is not scared of trying new things and taking people on in one-on-ones. He wants to learn and he listens a lot in training.

“I am also very surprised about [James] Garner. Angel [Gomes] also has a lot of quality and the striker [Greenwood], I didn’t know he was 16 years old and he was fighting against men. So I am very confident and I hope one day that they kick our ass out of the club, that will show that the club is doing the right things.”

Let’s hope the younger lads get another run out on Sunday night against San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara, California.
