De Gea has been a long term target for Real president Florentino Perez and agreed his dream move to the Santiago Bernabeu back in 2015, only for a deadline day administrative error to stop the transfer going through.
He hasn’t pushed to leave Man United since and has only strengthened his relationship with supporters as he looks set to enter his eighth season at the club.
The Manchester Evening News claim that De Gea has ‘ended thoughts’ about leaving United to return to the Spanish capital and where he began his dazzling career, but at Real’s rivals Atletico Madrid.
Real are said to be targeting Chelsea no. 1 Thibaut Courtois this summer, which suggests any potential De Gea departure is dead in the water and is music to the ears of every United fan around the globe.
The 27-year-old has been treated as a scapegoat for Spain’s miserable 2018 World Cup campaign, in which they were knocked out in the round of sixteen on penalties against Russia, due to a couple of mistakes in between the sticks.
He’ll almost certainly be back to his best once August comes around though as he goes into the new campaign as a four-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award winner.
