Report: Manchester United prioritise Harry Maguire signing this summer

Jose Mourinho has cooled his interest in signing a full-back this summer and will make recruiting a new centre-back the priority at Manchester United, according to reports.

Despite previously stating that Man United needed to strengthen the full-back areas in order to challenge for the Premier League title next season, Mourinho now seems to be happy with the options he has.

Prior to the summer transfer window, United used Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young as first-choice full-backs with Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw acting as back-up, and that very well could be how it stays.

The Telegraph claim that Mourinho nows sees the £19m capture of 19-year-old FC Porto right-back Diogo Dalot sufficient enough back-up for his more experienced options.

With Darmian expected to leave before the 2018-19 season kicks off, it would appear that the United boss plans to use Valencia and Young as his first choices again with Dalot and Shaw acting as back-up.

This paves the way for United to fully focus on bringing in a new centre-back before the window slams shut, and the club have identified Leicester City star Harry Maguire as a key target.

It is believed the 25-year-old will cost in excess of £50m if United were to launch a pursuit after ending interest in Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Toby Alderweireld due to Spurs’ asking price.

Mourinho’s desire to bring in a new central defender surely spells the end for one of the players already at the club in the position – Chris Smalling and Phil Jones appear to be the most likely to move on.
