Jose Mourinho has confirmed he wants to see Manchester United add two more players to the squad before the transfer window shuts in 16 days.
Man United have acquired teenage full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto, midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, and Lee Grant from Stoke City.
A period of radio silence in the transfer market for United has prompted many fans into writing off the possibility of any other additions before the window shuts on August 9.
But Mourinho, speaking to ESPN, noted he wanted two further additions but once again voiced doubts over whether either could be wrapped up in time.
“One thing is what I would like,” he said. “Another thing is what is going to happen” Asked directly how many further signings he needs, Mourinho said: “I would get two more players.”
The 55-year-old’s emphasis securing another central defender is well documented, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld still a target despite United initially balking at his valuation.
This second position, however, remains a mystery. Could it be a replacement for Anthony Martial? Reports over the last couple of days show his future at Old Trafford to be far less than certain.
Or could it be, finally, an attempt to address the club’s glaring problems in the full-back position? Nobody really believes that a currently injured 19-year-old in Dalot can mask the inertia which hallmarked that area of the pitch so often for United last season.
Either way, with just over two weeks left, the club needs to get a serious move on.
