The defender, known as ‘Slab-head’ by Jamie Vardy, impressed suitors from all over Europe with a series of composed and steely performances in a back three for England at the World Cup in Russia.
Maguire recently made it clear in an interview that he would be open to the chance of playing for a top club following his experience at the finals.
“Every player wants to play at the highest level,” he said. “I’ve just come back from playing at a World Cup, where I really enjoyed the high pressure of the games.”
“It was something that I really thrived off. ‘Leicester have been unbelievable to me and I’m really happy there but I’m also an ambitious player and everyone wants to play at the top.”
And according to the Mail‘s Chris Wheeler, Maguire believes he will join United before the transfer window closes on August 9, although Jose Mourinho – who name-checked Maguire over the World Cup – would need to dispense with one of his defenders before a move happens.
That defender would likely be Marcos Rojo, whose injury record at Old Trafford has been abysmal. Mourinho wants a centre-back he can trust to remain fit throughout the campaign, thereby placing not just Rojo but Phil Jones and Eric Bailly in jeopardy too.
Many supporters would have hoped for Mourinho to address the full-back position above anything this summer and place faith in a partnership of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof instead. That chances of that happening, however, are virtually non-existent.
