The 29-year-old has been on a three-week holiday after participating at the 2018 World Cup in Russia where he couldn’t help Serbia progress from a tricky Group E including Brazil and Switzerland.
Matic was back and raring to go though, but this comes as a huge blow with just two weeks to go until the start of the competitive season against Leicester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League opener.
After watching his Man United side draw their third game of pre-season against AC Milan, but then go on to win a thrilling penalty shoot-out 9-8, Mourinho broke the news to MUTV.
“The important thing for me is with the group of players we have – and losing already Valencia and Matic – even worse to play against Milan’s best team and to play the way we did and get the result that could be even better than it was I think was good.”
Matic didn’t feature in the 1-1 draw at the StubHub Arena on Thursday morning after just starting training on Tuesday, and many supporters thought it’d be so he could be eased back into action.
The official club website posted earlier today that Matic was part of an unavailable trio though, and he’s now definitely a big doubt for this weekend’s next International Champions Cup clash against Liverpool.
