The Ivorian started last season performing superbly alongside Phil Jones, only for injuries – including a three month spell on the sidelines – to seriously limit his appearances throughout the campaign.
He was available for less than half of Man United games in all competitions, prompting Jose Mourinho – while claiming he was giving preference to players going to the World Cup – to all but forget about him during the latter stages of the campaign.
But according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, United have told the defender that, despite their search for a new centre-back, he is not for sale this summer.
Mourinho was clearly unhappy with Bailly last season but not because of any defect in the player’s attitude or persona. Put simply, the 55-year-old grew exasperated with the Ivorian, along with Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, constantly dropping to the injury table. The only defender who remained fit in 2018 was Chris Smalling.
You can only hope Bailly isn’t remembered by supporters as a talented but always injured player. United will be far better off with him playing on a weekly basis – preferably alongside Victor Lindelof or any signing the club manages to make in the coming 13 days.
