David de Gea has returned to training with Manchester United following a difficult World Cup with Spain.
The keeper enjoyed his finest season between the sticks last season, claiming the club’s ‘Player of the Year’ award once again and receiving his first ‘Golden Glove’ award since arriving in 2011.
His World Cup with Spain, however, was hallmarked by a number of errors in the group stages and his failure to save his country’s skin in a penalty shootout with Russia at the last 16 stage.
It is a testament to De Gea’s inherent talent that supporters were untroubled by his drop in form over the World Cup, which felt acutely psychological more than anything.
De Gea for Spain and De Gea for United are totally different characters. The former is plagued with doubt and almost looks like a normal keeper. At Old Trafford, however, he appears to stand a few inches taller.
Supporters will be delighted to have him back in United colours while hoping he doesn’t have to be as busy as he was last season.
