Manchester United star Ander Herrera tried to brush the heavy defeat to Liverpool under the carpet by claiming the least important thing in pre-season is the result.
The Spaniard was a part of the team that lost 4-1 to their fierce rivals as they continued their disappointing tour of the United States of America.
Certainly there’s a focus on regaining fitness and putting in decent performances rather than getting concerned with results but it’s been far from pleasant so far.
United have only won once this summer so far and had to do so through penalties after holding AC Milan to a dull 1-1 draw.
Some fans have lost their patience with Jose Mourinho while others believe there shouldn’t be too much read into it at all.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ander said to MUTV: “The least important thing is the result right now. We are playing with the same players every game.
“It looks like a Christmas period to be honest rather than a pre-season, but it is what it is. We have to be all together, to try to have minutes in our legs, to not think too much about the results and let’s try to keep improving because the most important thing is Leicester.
“Of course it is never nice to lose. But pre-season is pre-season. Everyone is giving their best, trying to help us. Even the kids, they are doing amazing, they are trying to help.
“But the difference between us and Milan, or Liverpool, is that they have 16 or 17 first-team players and we just have maybe 10.
“We must say thanks to the kids because they are helping and giving everything, so let’s try to keep improving and always focus on the first Premier League game against Leicester.”
Herrera had kinder words for the United youngsters than Mourinho did who simply kept continuing his narrative of not having the squad he wants.
The World Cup has definitely put a dent in his pre-season plans ahead of what is arguably his most important season at the club so far.
A genuine title challenge is expected or he could risk losing his job but the Red Devils have only made one major signing in Fred this summer.
