Leicester City manager Claude Puel has explained just why the club can hold on to Harry Maguire after he emerged as a Manchester United target.
The Englishman was said to have impressed Jose Mourinho after his performances at the World Cup and is now seriously being recruited.
It’s been no secret the Portuguese manager is on the lookout for a new centre-back though reports claimed he was searching for an experienced and proven one.
Players such as AC Milan’s Leonardo Bonucci was of interest but it seems as though Mourinho has turned his attentions firmly onto Maguire.
Puel is adamant he can hold on to his star player though which may be yet another blow to the former Real Madrid manager.
According to Manchester Evening News, Claude said: “I think we can keep both [Maguire and Schmeichel] players. We cannot lose players just a few days before the beginning of the season.
“We would not be able to find a solution and we cannot be be behind. Kasper and Maguire are so valuable for us. It is important to maintain our structure, our squad and all our valuable players for the team.
“We know all the difficulties after the World Cup, to work in this condition to prepare all of the squad, to keep good mentality and spirit and to find a good level for every player.
“If we have another surprise before the end of the pre-season, it will be tough.”
It’s clear Jose hasn’t been pleased with the United hierarchy over their inability to sign the players he wants with only one major transfer completed so far.
The transfer window shuts in less than two weeks and Fred has been the only star to arrive at Old Trafford despite reports the former Chelsea boss had identified other weaknesses.
It’s become clear that either vice-executive chairman Ed Woodward is inept or some people at the club believe Mourinho can challenge with his current squad.
