Both players were present in Gareth Southgate’s 2018 World Cup squad in Russia and helped England reach a first semi-final since lifting the iconic trophy in 1966.
A chunk of Man United’s key players also went the distance at the summer tournament, resulting in their absences on the pre-season tour of the United States.
Supporters have been questioning why Jones and Rashford aren’t already preparing for the new campaign due to their limited roles at the World Cup, but now Mourinho seems to have confirmed they are on their way back.
Speaking to MUTV after United’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in Michigan on Saturday night, he revealed: “I just hope the boys on deserved holidays, they take care of themselves a little bit & somebody wants to do what Rashford & Jones do.
“That is to be back a little bit earlier to try & help the team because for the beginning of the season we are going to be in trouble.”
Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and Nemanja Matic are all high-profile stars who will miss the start of the season through injury, whilst new signings Diogo Dalot and Fred have only just returned to training after injuries.
Both Jones and Rashford’s availability will mean a great deal, especially if United fail to bring in the centre-back and right-winger Mourinho craves before the transfer window slams shut.
