Toby Alderweireled will not renew his contract at Tottenham Hotspur and is keen on joining Manchester United this summer, according to reports.
The Belgium international has been earmarked as Jose Mourinho’s top defensive target during the transfer window but negotiations with Spurs have so far proven difficult.
Spurs are reportedly asking for around £60m, whereas Man United only want to pay a fee in the region of £50m for the defender.
And according to the Mirror’s Darren Lewis, Alderweireld, who recently returned from holiday, has his heart set on completing a move to Old Trafford.
His situation at Spurs is largely untenable. Manager Mauricio Pochettino stopped giving Alderweireld playing time after he failed to strike an agreement at the club over his wages as part of a new deal, which means he can effectively leave the club for just £25m next summer if he stays put for the 2018/19 campaign.
United are offering twice that amount – perhaps even more – for a player Pochettino doesn’t even need and someone Mourinho certainly wants.
Perhaps the simple fact that Spurs, with six days until the transfer window shuts, are yet to make a single signing has rendered chairman Daniel Levy reluctant to part ways with such a talented player.
