The Frenchman’s agent claimed his client wanted to leave in June and Jose Mourinho’s recent comments over Martial’s failure to return to the club’s pre-season tour following the birth of his child only further intensified speculation surrounding his future.
But Martial returned to Man United training yesterday and has been included in the squad to face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.
And according to the Mirror‘s Richard Tanner, United are in no position to sell Martial this summer due to failing to identify a replacement over the transfer window.
Willian appeared an early favourite to step in for Martial but new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri recently insisted the Brazilian would stay at the club. Ante Rebic, who impressed out wide for Croatia at the World Cup, looks to be joining Sevilla instead. How interested United really were in him is open to question. Ivan Perisic’s name was thrown about once again but never seriously.
As such, the club – even if they wanted to – simply cannot afford to let Martial leave, whose £80m price tag has deterred potential suitors during this window.
