Chris Smalling: Vegan diet has helped me stay injury free

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United star Chris Smalling has revealed how he stayed relatively injury free last season, pointing towards a vegan diet as the solution to his problems.

The Englishman is known for being injury prone and was one of the causes to his inability to fulfil his once limitless potential.

Smalling is now 28 years old, no longer a youngster, and it’s fair to say he won’t develop into a better player than he already is.

However, last season the centre-back was one of the more consistent names on the team-sheet in terms of the backline due to being available to his manager.

The likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones suffered consistent knocks, even if some were small injuries that kept them out of the side.

According to Manchester Evening news, Chris said: “It’s [vegan diet] certainly a factor in me playing all those games. When I started out I had quite a lot of injuries.

“As I’ve got older I’ve become a lot more conscious of my diet and making sure I was getting all the right things. Obviously, the last couple of years it’s been more plant-based.

“Ultimately, what you’re feeding yourself has a bearing on how you’re going to perform.

“You’re never going to be bulletproof, but if you’re feeding yourself good food and making sure you’re eating the right supplements, I think you reduce the chances of getting any niggling injuries.

“Touch wood, I’ve not had any major problems since then and hopefully I can keep fit and play as many games as I can.”

Whatever the reason for his improved fitness, the hopes are Smalling can remain injury free for United this upcoming season too.

Whether fans want to see him on the pitch or not, it would still be useful to have him as an option should there be an injury crisis of sorts.

Knowing the history of the Red Devils’ defenders, an injury crisis is more likely than not and perhaps they can learn from Chris’ change in diet.
