Jose Mourinho has told Man United to make bringing in a central defender a priority before the summer transfer window closes next week, but the club have been frustrated in their efforts.
United have been pursuing Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld since May, but the North London club’s £75m valuation of the Belgium international stalled negotiations.
German outlet Bild, as quoted by Metro, claim that if the two clubs can’t meet an agreement for Alderweireld’s services, United will sway their focus towards Boateng even though Paris Saint-Germain are hot favourites for his signature.
Mourinho could go as far as letting Martial leave for the Allianz Arena if that’s what it takes to get a new centre-half for his squad.
The 29-year-old is hungry for a new challenge and is thought to have a handful of suitors, but United would have to act before Thursday because of the earlier transfer deadline – compared to the international deadline on 30 August.
At this moment in time, it seems like the Alderweireld transfer will eventually go through with Spurs looking to sell him on, but the clock is ticking.
