Wes Brown: I would make David de Gea Manchester United captain

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United legend Wes Brown has revealed who he would want as captain of the club, backing David de Gea as a potential captain.

Jose Mourinho has the task of choosing a new leader in the squad following Michael Carrick hanging up his boots and joining the backroom staff.

The Portuguese manager did seemingly suggest Antonio Valencia would be his new captain for the upcoming season but it’ll only be official when things kick off.

The Ecuadorian was the vice-captain for the last campaign but missed out on occasion due to some injuries so the likes of Chris Smalling and Paul Pogba wore the armband.

Brown though believes it shouldn’t go to any of the aforementioned names and it should go to De Gea due to his consistently high performances.

According to Manchester Evening News, Wes said: “I would have De Gea as captain. He’s always brilliant and has been the back-bone of the team. He shows that every game.”

Some of the Red Devils’ fan base were so impressed with Pogba’s leadership role in France’s World Cup victory that they hoped he would be given the extra responsibility.

Romelu Lukaku was also visibly vocal for his Belgian side that placed in third and there were some shouts that he should be made captain too.

Either way, Valencia is one of the more experienced players at the club and has been at Manchester United for a long period of time.
