Romelu Lukaku has returned to training at Manchester United for the first time since the World Cup.

The striker, who claimed 27 goals for Man United last season, enjoyed a superb World Cup with Belgium, scoring four goals on route to the semi-final.

Jose Mourinho confirmed last week that Lukaku had agreed to cut short his holiday – spent in the United States – by three days to help the team.

He was pictured driving into the club’s training base in Carrington as the main body of the squad enjoyed a day off following the defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Alexis Sanchez displayed moments of promise playing down the middle over pre-season but United were nonetheless limited going forward without the Belgian leading the attack. As the FA Cup final proved, they are just not the same beast.

That is why his quick and successful return to fitness and Jose Mourinho’s starting XI is so important. He brings character as much as he brings goalscoring threat to the United team, always stretching opponents and serving as an option in the box. Over the World Cup he also proved to be a born leader – a man who relishes the big challenge.

United will, no doubt, only return to their best once Lukaku is back in full swing. A big season for him awaits.
