Matteo Darmian “on standby” to leave Manchester United this week – report

Matteo Darmian remains “on standby” to leave Manchester United before the Serie A transfer deadline on Friday, according to reports.

The defender only made one Premier League start between November and April last season, and has looked destined for a return to Serie A.

However, injury problems for Antonio Valencia and Diogo Dalot, coupled with Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah going on loan, has laid the way for Darmian to play plenty of minutes over pre-season and start against Leicester City last Friday.

But according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Darmian remains intent on leaving the club this week and is “on standby” to return to Italy before the transfer window closes.

The defender is currently staying at a hotel in Manchester’s city centre without his wife, Francesca, as he looks to finalise the details of a move back to his homeland.

Jose Mourinho would want to see the defender remain at the club until either Dalot or Valencia can return, but the Portuguese – and of course Darmian – will know a return to Italy serves as the best move for the 28-year-old’s career.
