Bayern Munich are plotting a transfer for Manchester United target Toby Alderweireld ahead of Jerome Boateng’s move to Paris Saint Germain, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho marked out Alderweireld as his number one defensive target over the summer but no deal was ever struck with Tottenham Hotspur, whose asking price for the Belgian was balked at by Old Trafford chiefs.
Man United consequently turned their attentions to signing Boateng in the last few days of the window but the defender looks set to join the French champions instead.
And according to the Mirror‘s Adrian Kajumba, Bayern have lined up Alderweireld as an ideal replacement for the injury prone Boateng this summer.
Germany’s transfer window goes on for another two weeks, giving Bayern plenty of time to make a truly shrewd move in jettisoning the unreliable Boateng and drafting in Alderweireld, who has been one of the best Premier League defenders in recent years.
United could have signed him. They could have paid what Spurs had asked for and been done with it, but they didn’t. For whatever reason, those within the hierarchy believed that shelling out around £60m for the defender was not worth it.
Only time will tell if they made the right decision.
