Jose Mourinho has confirmed Anthony Martial received a fine for refusing to rejoin Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States after returning home for the birth of his second child.
The Frenchman featured in the club’s first two pre-season fixtures but flew back to Manchester to be with his partner as she gave birth to ‘Swan’.
He did not return to the tour and Mourinho hit out at the striker for failing to report back. Martial later revealed that he had stayed by his partner’s side due to post-natal difficulties.
Speaking on the subject of Paul Pogba’s “fine” comments, Mourinho revealed that Martial was the only player who had been fined during his time in charge at Old Trafford.
“I’m not going to ask him. I want him to work the way he is doing and play the way he is doing and that’s all that matters.”
You really hope that Martial was fined for a lack of communication in the days following the birth of his child. Essentially going AWOL, with no explanation of your absence, does indeed constitute a breach of contract (although perhaps it is worth noting that working males in the United Kingdom are entitled to up to two weeks of paternity leave).
But if United knew about the health problems for Melanie, his fiancé, handing Martial a fine for putting family first would be an extremely callous move.
