Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has backed Paul Pogba to become captain of the club but has called on him to show more consistency.
The Frenchman was handed the armband by Jose Mourinho for the clash against Leicester City and was named man of the match.
United won 2-1 thanks to goals from Pogba and Luke Shaw so it’s fair to say the Portuguese boss’ faith was paid back in full.
Fans were confused though when they saw the former Juventus man was named captain but Mourinho has since confirmed it was temporary.
Antonio Valencia is the official captain for the season but is currently out due to an injury suffered in pre-season.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ryan said: “I think everyone recognises the quality Paul Pogba has and he had an excellent World Cup, so after winning that it was a recognition of what he can bring to the team.
“From the outside he looks like a leader but what we haven’t seen is the consistency of the likes of Bryan Robson and Roy Keane, so that extra responsibility will hopefully help him maintain his levels.
“The captains I played under really had that consistency and would still contribute on their bad days and I’ve got no doubts that he will reach those levels of consistency for United and be a top, top player.”
Paul can finally end all the talk over his inconsistencies this season after winning the World Cup with France in the summer.
There’s no doubt his injury half way through the last campaign messed around with the momentum he built up in the beginning.
Pogba was in fine form for the start of the last season but struggled to perform when he returned from an ill timed injury.
This time around the midfielder is fit and firing too so there’s hopes he will remain injury free so he can shake the inconsistency label off.
