Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has backed Romelu Lukaku to start the clash against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
The Belgian was missing from the starting XI in Jose Mourinho’s first match of the season against Leicester City.
United managed to come out of the clash with all three points after winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw.
Nonetheless Lukaku’s absence was felt as Marcus Rashford led the line with little reward and Giggs has backed the former to start ahead of the latter.
The former Everton man missed the first fixture due to his exploits for his nation at the World Cup but with a few training sessions under his belt, he is the favourite to start.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ryan said: “I would imagine Romelu Lukaku, if he is fit, will come back into the line-up at Brighton as he’s obviously Jose Mourinho’s first choice, but United do have options in Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez as well if he’s not ready.
“I think he’s proven over the last five or six years to regularly get around the 20-goal mark so he’s the main man for the centre-forward role; it’s up to the others to step up and provide competition.”
There’s no denying Manchester United are a different force when Lukaku is on the field and Mourinho must be excited at having his main man back.
The powerful forward is arguably one of the club’s most important players alongside the likes of David de Gea and Paul Pogba.
Jose’s tactics require a target man who’s able to hold up the play and link-up with teammates so it’s no surprise Rashford, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez fail to fill in.
