Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes the current chaos unfolding at Manchester United has provided Anthony Martial with reason to stay at the club.
Martial looked destined for a move away from Old Trafford in the summer after his agent made it clear in June that the Frenchman was unhappy at the club.
But no such move has materialised, with Martial starting in Man United’s horrendous 3-2 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion – a result which has set in motion widespread calls for Jose Mourinho or Ed Woodward, or both, to be dismissed from the club.
And Nicol, speaking earlier this week, opined that Martial has decided to play the waiting game at Old Trafford this season.
“I’m going to say no,” he said.
“Up until a couple of weeks ago I would have said this guy is desperate to get out. But I think he’ll be looking at what’s going on at Man United, what’s going on with Mourinho.
“I think he will hold fire. So because of that I’m going to say no.”
Things move fast in football, and Martial knows that.
There is no doubt that the youngster, following two difficult seasons, entertained the idea of leaving the club more than once.
His problem, however, is not the club itself. Playing for United is a huge honour, and something he has excelled at – in spirit and in substance – in patches since arriving in 2015.
The problem is very much Mourinho, whose lack of attacking nuance and distrust of Martial’s character is hampering the Frenchman and his teammates.
But he will be aware of how quickly situations can change. Mourinho has this season and this season alone to prove himself. Martial has years ahead of him. He would be smart to see how the situation plays out.
