The Frenchman started on the left hand side against Brighton and Hove Albion and, like all his teammates, failed to have a discernible impact on the game.
Along with Eric Bailly, the worst performer at Brighton, he was left out of the 18-man squad which lost 3-0 at home to Spurs on Monday night.
And according to French media outlet RMC Sport, Martial was left dumbfounded by his total omission from the United squad, placing further tension on his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho.
The same outlet reported ahead of the clash with Spurs that Ed Woodward, contrary to the wishes of Mourinho, had tabled a lucrative five-year contract offer to Martial, although the Frenchman wants to be guaranteed more game time – something his current manager won’t give him – before he signs on the dotted line.
You can see a certain impasse building here, although it may not matter in a couple of months should results fail to improve. Martial, who many believe can be a star, would be wise to simply keep his head down and bide his time at the moment.
