Luke Shaw reveals he nearly lost his leg after 2015 injury for Manchester United

Luke Shaw has revealed the shocking news that he almost lost his leg back in 2015 as he looked to recover from a serious injury.

The young Englishman suffered a horrendous leg break while playing for Manchester United against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League group stages in September 2015.

Taken off on a stretcher with an oxygen mask, it was clear from the very moment that Shaw’s leg was badly injured.

However, the Man United man has explained that he came close to losing his leg during the recovery stage.

Shaw also conceded that he had thought that his career could be over.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about stopping playing,” he said, speaking while with the England squad.

“I had a lot of complications with my leg and that was the really hard moment for me in my career.

“No-one knows but I was really close to actually losing my leg. I never knew that until six months later when the doctor told me.

“At the time, they were thinking about flying me back and if I’d have flown back, I would probably have lost my leg because of the blood clots and stuff.”

It shows just how severe Shaw’s injury and only goes to exaggerate the comeback he has now made. Since Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford and took charge, Shaw has generally struggled with fitness, match opportunities and performances.

But after an intense pre-season fitness regime and some small changes in lifestyle. Shaw looks back to his very best and was named United’s Player of the Month for August.

He needs to keep at a consistent level to secure his status as United’s number one left-back, and it’s only four games into the new season. But it’s been a positive start.

The effects of his injury remain for him to see, though.

“I’ve got – I don’t want to talk about it too much – two scars down the side of my leg where they had to cut it open and pull them out because of how severe it was<“ Shaw continued. "But I don't really care about that any more. I feel really strong and my right leg is exactly as it was before my leg break."
