David de Gea insists he’s “really happy” at Manchester United as contract talks stall

David de Gea has insisted he is “really happy” at Manchester United despite reports that negotiations over a new contract at the club have stalled.

The Spaniard is Jose Mourinho’s most important player at Man United, and shows that every week.

He had been expected to sign a new deal to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford, but there are strong suggestions that De Gea is demanding to become the highest-paid player at the club, alongside Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba.

Ahead of United’s opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League against Young Boys in Switzerland, De Gea was questioned about a new contract and his future.

“Well, I feel very loved in this club, from the fans and for all the people who work for this club,” de Gea answered.

“I’m really happy to be at this club. It’s one of the best clubs in the world, so for me it’s really good for me to be a part of this club.”

It’s good to hear that De Gea remains positive about his position as a United player, as always. Of course, he could be demanding more in negotiations, but he has never been a player to cause controversy with his comments in the media.

That has been true throughout De Gea’s career, despite coming very close to leaving United for Real Madrid in 2015. Even during that saga, De Gea was private about the matter and ensured there were no hard feelings so that when he did end up staying at United, there was only love from the fans.

Compare him to midfielder Paul Pogba, and the difference in their comments is very notable. Pogba hints at unhappiness when asked, and stays mysterious. De Gea, in contrast, is effusive in his praise for the club and keeps the fans on side.
