Jose Mourino has revealed that Diogo Dalot is finally ready to make his debut for Manchester United after signing from FC Porto in the summer.
Dalot arrived at Old Trafford as one of three summer signings, joining from Porto for a fee of under £20 million.
Yet having signed with a pre-existing injury, Dalot has only just returned, playing the last two consecutive games for the club’s under-23s side.
He travelled with the first team squad to Switzerland as Man United take on Swiss champions Young Boys in their opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League away from home.
Mourinho hinted that he could make his first appearance.
“We decide not to bring Antonio Valencia because his knee is not a knee that needs an artificial pitch at all,” Mourinho said, with Valencia having started at right-back most frequently this season as the club captain.
“Luke Shaw is playing tomorrow and apart from him, we have Diogo [Dalot], Young and Darmian ready to play.”
It would be fantastic to see Dalot make his debut. Firstly, it’s been too long to wait to see an exciting young talent who Mourinho clearly writers highly given he is just 19 but the Portuguese manager was willing to shell out near £20 million for him.
But it would also indicate one of the first times in the last few seasons that the Reds have started with two natural full-backs, because Shaw is starting on the left flank.
Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young have been regular starters, and the pair are good figures to have at the club, but are not good enough to be starters. They are failed wingers who aren’t good enough in defence and whose attacking contribution is limited.
