Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Marcus Rashford will play for Manchester United in Wednesday night’s game against Young Boys. The Reds start their UEFA Champions League campaign on a partial 3G astro-turf pitch against the Swiss champions.
Rashford is suspended for domestic games after a straight red card received against Burnley before the international break for violent conduct against Phil Bardsley. He’s missed one fixture already, a 2-1 win against Watford, but must wait two more games to return in domestic fixtures.
With this being a European game, though, Mourinho told reporters at his pre-match press conference in Switzerland that Rashford is set to play.
“He is selected,” Mourinho revealed.
The Portuguese was keen to instruct the media in attendance to be positive about his team selection.
“I just want to remind you, in advance, that we can only start with XI,” Mourinho began.
“So tomorrow when you see the team, you could try to speak about the ones who are going to play, and not the ones who are not going to play.
“So we have Lukaku, Rashford, Mata, Alexis, Martial and they can not play all together. So try to be a little bit happy with the ones that are playing, and not to be critic with the ones who are not playing.”
Mourinho is often criticised for not starting certain players, including young forwards Rashford and Martial. It seems unlikely that Martial will start, with Rashford set to take up that position on the left flank since he’s suspended for next Saturday’s game against Wolves.
Journalists will still dissect the team and criticise certain decisions, as they always do, because that’s their job. But it’s a good chance for Rashford to take a chance from the start and impress Mourinho.
