Manchester United have set their sights on highly rated 19-year-old Hertha Berlin midfielder Arne Maier, according to reports.
It was thought ahead of the summer transfer window that Man United would look to sign two midfielders, but Marouane Fellaini‘s decision to extend his future at the club meant Fred was the only signing in that position to arrive.
Maier has attracted the attention of several top clubs, such as Juventus and Arsenal, after becoming Hertha’s youngest ever debutant at 17 and cementing his place in the starting XI.
And according to the Sunday Mirror‘s Chris Hatherall, United are keeping close tabs on the talented youngster this season.
Many in Germany have described the teenager as a new Toni Kroos. And the maturity of his passing at such a young age hints towards the kind of natural, inbuilt sense of vision and execution which hallmarks Kroos’ game. As a coach might say, he just has it.
He may be only 19 but has Bundesliga experience, featuring 17 times last season, and plays for a very competitive Germany Under-21 side. In other words, he is most definitely worth watching.
