Rio Ferdinand congratulated Derby County on claiming a “deserved win” against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the League Cup third round.
Jose Mourinho’s men started well, going ahead after three minutes through Juan Mata, only to waste a series of chances and, just like against Wolves, concede an equaliser early in the second half.
Derby then took a late lead, which Marouane Fellaini cancelled out with an injury time header, only for Man United to lose 8-7 on penalties.
Ferdinand took to social media after the game and claimed that Derby deserved their victory.

To see a Championship team, managed by a man in his first job, play with such courage and precision and energy while United, bolstered by almost half a billion pounds worth of talent and a manager with 25 trophies to his name, played without rhythm or understanding whatsoever was nothing short of mind boggling.
United have, in the space of four days, been outplayed by Wolves and Derby. Even Watford and Leicester City were better than Mourinho’s team despite ultimately losing the game.
That very notion is concrete proof in itself that this team, under Mourinho, is performing miles below its potential. Anybody could see that change is needed.
