Manchester United forced to pay €10m for Anthony Martial’s goal against Newcastle

Manchester United have had to pay Ligue 1 side AS Monaco a further £8.7m after striker Anthony Martial triggered a payment by scoring recently.

The Frenchman netted the equaliser for Man United in an epic 3-2 comeback against Newcastle United last Saturday. That triggered one of three additional clauses in the transfer that brought Martial, as a teenager, to Manchester in 2015 while Louis van Gaal was manager at Old Trafford.

United signed Martial for an initial £36million in September 2015 which made him the most expensive teenager in the world. That record has been absolutely smashed since by the transfer of Kylian Mbappe from AS Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain.

Martial produced as soon as he arrived for United, netting 17 goals in his opening season and leading the line for van Gaal. Since, he’s struggled to return to such heights but his equaliser on Saturday was a fine finish after he had started the move himself.

It means United must pay Monaco £8.7m, taking the current cost of Martial up to just under £45m. That will rise further if Martial meets two more targets.

The most likely one is reaching 25 appearances for the French national team. Martial is on 18 as of October 2018 but has struggled to work his way into the plans of Didier Deschamps while under Mourinho at United.

Martial and Mourinho have had a frosty relationship and the Frenchman has been condemned to the substitutes bench frequently. When he has played, it’s often been to little effect.

His stagnation under Mourinho means the achievement of winning the Ballon d’Or looks unlikely for Martial. That would trigger a €10m clause in the transfer, just as reaching 25 apps for France would.
