Manchester United to face stiff competition for Toby Alderweireld signing – report

Manchester United could be faced with stiff competition if they target Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Reds were reportedly heavily interested in Alderweireld in the summer and could consider making a move for the 29-year-old in either the January transfer window or next summer.

However, the Mirror report that La Liga champions FC Barcelona are also in search of a new centre-back and one option for the Spanish giants is Alderweireld.

The Spurs man is hugely rated in the Premier League and seen as one of the best defenders in the English game. Barcelona will look to sign the Belgian in January due to their own defensive issues.

Long-term defensive leader Gerard Pique is out of form and they’ve had a number of injuries. Man United are in a similar situation with a low-on-confidence Eric Bailly and a weak defensive set-up in general.

Alderweireld’s contract at Tottenham expires at the end of the season and negotiations have not moved forward. Spurs could trigger a one-year extension in Alderweireld’s deal, but that would in turn trigger a £25million release clause at the end of the season.

There were suggestions that United decided not to pursue Alderweireld due to his age. However, if they have changed their mind after a woeful defensive start to the season, Barcelona will provide huge competition.
