Michael Essien has hailed Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and insisted that the Reds could still win titles this season.
Mourinho has guided Man United to one of their worst ever starts to a Premier League season. With three losses in their opening seven fixtures, United then mounted an epic 3-2 comeback against Newcastle United before the international break to get back on track.
But with games coming up against Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester City, things could get worse again. Essien played under Mourinho at Chelsea and has a fantastic relationship with his former-boss.
He claimed that the Portuguese coach will always guide his teams to silverware, as Mourinho did in his first season at Old Trafford with the UEFA Europa League and EFL Cup.
“You know that when you play under Mourinho, you know you are going to win titles,” Essien said.
“He has been at United for two or three years now and he has been winning trophies. The season is still long and they still have a lot of competitions to play.”
Essien back Mourinho to turn things around at United.
“He is just a great manager and I know that he has been having a bit of a tough time in Manchester, but knowing him I think he is going to turn it around,” the ex-Premier League footballer said.
“I am backing him because I am still going to be his No.1 fan!”
Essien’s comments on Mourinho shows how Mourinho can have fantastic relationships with his players. At United, that hasn’t been on show with anyone but Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has now left for Major League Soccer.
Players like Pogba, Shaw, Martial, Mkhitaryan and many others have had bad experiences with Mourinho and United fans will be hoping to see more Essien-style relationships at their club.
