Wayne Rooney scored another brace against New York City FC to claim an unthinkable playoff spot in the Eastern Conference for DC United.
The former Manchester United captain joined DC United back in July when they were five points adrift at the bottom of the table.
In just 19 games Rooney has completely turned around his club’s fate, scoring 12 goals and claiming nine assists.
His latest brace was arguably the most important yet: a tap in and penalty to clinch a place in the playoffs for the first time in DC United’s history.

Before Rooney unexpectedly moved to Washington, DC United were a nothing club going nowhere. Only 5,000 or so were attending games and they had a record of two wins, five draws and seven defeats.
But his talismanic influence has completely transformed the club. In 21 games DC United have won 13 times, drawing four games. More importantly, perhaps, average attendances have almost quadrupled. Everybody in the football world now knows exactly who DC United are.
Away from the pressure and turmoil of captaining Man United, away from the constant Rooney puns in the tabloids and endless invasion of every detail in his life, Rooney has been born again, and it is beautiful to see.
