Player ratings: Manchester United 0-1 Juventus

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 7 – Not at fault for Paolo Dybala’s goal. Made an impressive double save in the first half and a stupendous diving stop to deny Cristiano Ronaldo in the second.

Ashley Young 5 – Played with heart and plenty of energy but, going forward, everything felt predictable from the Englishman. Poor delivery from out wide.

Chris Smalling 6 – Could have shown much more positional intelligence and strength for Dybala’s goal but, on the whole, marshalled the back four with authority.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Without doubt Manchester United’s best performer, producing a tidy, gutsy defensive display to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at bay.

Luke Shaw 6 – Struggled to cope with both Ronaldo and Cuadrado at times, especially in the first half. That said, this was another polished all around display. Always looked to get forward.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Had a nightmare tracking Paulo Dybala and Miralem Pjanic when he got forward, often looking too slow, but his use of the ball was much better.

Paul Pogba 5 – Looked to instigate play up the pitch and produced some nice moments on the ball but, frustratingly, gave the ball away with sloppy passes on too many occasions.

Juan Mata 6 – Another sharp, incisive display on the ball, taking up good positions and helping play along. Would have wanted better delivery into where he was playing.

Marcus Rashford 4 – An anonymous display from the youngster. Made a couple of bursts early on but largely looked nervy on the ball.

Anthony Martial 5 – Lacked the killer instinct we saw at Chelsea. Did up his game towards the end but often far too slow or too sloppy in possession.

Romelu Lukaku 4 – Once again very poor. Did not hold up the ball in any meaningful way and failed to present himself as a target man. Movement in and around the box desperately needs to improve.
