David De Gea has insisted that he’s ‘very happy’ at Manchester United amid speculation and concern about his future at the club.
The Spaniard is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and has drawn interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, who are both champions of their respective countries. Man United have not held that status for half a decade.
The club’s manager Jose Mourinho claimed yesterday that he was “not confident” that De Gea will sign a new deal. United do have an option to extend that current contract by one-year, though and are certain to do so.
Despite all the rumours surrounding his situation, De Gea has revealed his content was with life in Manchester at United, where has been since 2011.
“I’ve been here for many seasons, as we’ve said. I’ve been at the club for eight seasons now,” De Gea told Sky Sports News.
“I’m very happy here. I always feel that warmth from the fans and everyone who works at the club.”
It’s a statement that seems similar to previous comments. It had been thought up until now that De Gea was incredibly settled in Manchester.
His long term girlfriend, Spanish pop star Edurne, recently moved to the city and Real Madrid’s summer acquisition of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea means Los Blancos’ interest in De Gea is no more.
However, the one concern is that De Gea may look at United’s prospects of lifting the Premier League and UEFA Champions League and recoil in disgust. The Reds are miles off winning either competition. Juventus and PSG are favourites.
It’s positive to hear De Gea say such things, though. Throughout his time at the club, he has always avoided controversy, even when coming so close to joining Real Madrid in 2015. He’s a model professional.
